Pretty but perilous: These houseplants can harm your pet

Houseplants have surged in popularity in recent years, bringing color, texture, and a sense of calm indoors. For households with pets, however, some of the most common and attractive plants can pose real risks
Dogs and cats are naturally curious, and a nibble on the wrong leaf can lead to anything from mild stomach upset to serious illness. Knowing which plants are toxic – and how to keep pets safe – can help animal lovers enjoy greenery without worry
Why pets are at risk
Cats and dogs explore the world with their mouths. Cats may chew leaves out of curiosity or boredom, while dogs, natural scavengers, are even more likely to sample anything within reach. Pets don’t instinctively avoid toxic plants, and their smaller size means even a small amount can have a big effect. Some plants contain sap that irritates skin and mucous membranes; others affect the heart or kidneys; and a few can be life-threatening if ingested
Common toxic houseplants
Among the most dangerous plants for pets are true lilies (e.g., Easter lilies, tiger lilies, and Asiatic lilies). While popular in floral arrangements, these are extremely toxic to cats; even small exposures can cause severe kidney damage. For cat owners, it’s safest to avoid lilies altogether
With their ability to thrive in low-light conditions and the various attractive forms in which they are available, philodendrons make lovely houseplants; however, all parts are poisonous. They contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals which can cause severe reactions if ingested, including intense burning and irritation of mouth, tongue and lips; drooling; vomiting; and difficult and painful swallowing
Golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is another plant species containing insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that cause the same symptoms. Fortunately, these plants and many other pet-toxic plants are well-suited for hanging baskets and can be easily and safely kept out of reach
Dieffenbachia (Diffenbachia amoena), often called dumb cane, is another potential offender. Its leaves also contain crystals that can cause intense mouth irritation, drooling, and swelling when chewed
Other commonly found toxic plants include snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata), ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamifolia), peace lily (Spathiphyllum spp.), English ivy (Hedera helix), aloe (Aloe vera), andjade plant (Crassula ovata). While reactions may vary, symptoms often include vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, lethargy, or changes in behavior
Shamrock plant (Oxalis spp.) contains soluble calcium oxalates that can result in kidney failure, tremors, and salivation in cats and dogs. These plants grow in a variety of colors and are fun to collect, so just be sure to place them on higher shelves that are out of reach
Begonias are another tempting collectors’ plant, growing in a variety of patterns, colors, and textures. However, they share the same toxic element as the shamrocks. The fleshy root system contains the most toxic parts, so keep them away from diggers
The list of poisonous plants is long. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) maintains an extensive of database of plants that are toxic to dogs and cats that can be accessed on their website
Plants that are safer alternatives
If separation of flora and fauna is not an option in your house, there are plenty of non-poisonous plants that can co-exist peacefully with your pets
The following are considered non-poisonous: peperomia (Peperomia spp.), climbing begonia (Cissus dicolor), ponytail palm (Beaucarnea recurvata), goldfish plant (Hypocyrta nummularia), wax plant (Hoya carnosa), silver pink vine (Hoya publcalyx), lipstick plant (Aeschynanthus humilis), spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum), polka dot plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya), earth star (Cryptanthus bivattus minor), prayer plant (Calathea insignis), purple passion vine (Gynura aurantica), and Swedish ivy (Plectranthus australis). In addition, herbs like basil, rosemary, and thyme are generally safe and can double as kitchen staples.
Warning signs of plant poisoning
Because pets can’t tell us what’s wrong, it’s important to recognize early warning signs. Sudden vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, pawing at the mouth, loss of appetite, weakness, or unusual behavior after possible plant exposure should raise concern. In cats, hiding or sudden lethargy can be a subtle but serious sign
If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, or if you have any further questions about toxic plants, contact either your local veterinarian or the ASPCA Poison Control’s 24-hour emergency poison hotline at (888) 426-4435. Prompt advice and treatment can make a significant difference in outcomes
Prevention starts at home
The simplest prevention strategy is awareness. Before bringing a new house plant home, check whether it’s safe for pets
Placement also matters. Hanging baskets, high shelves, plant stands, and rooms pets can’t access may reduce risk, but determined animals can still reach surprising places. For especially toxic plants, avoidance is the safest choice.Training and enrichment can help, too
Providing cats with safe grasses or catmint to chew and dogs with appropriate toys may reduce their interest in houseplants. Bitter-tasting pet deterrent sprays can discourage chewing, though they should never be relied on alone
Pets and plants can safely mix
Houseplants and pets don’t have to be mutually exclusive. With thoughtful selection and a bit of planning, homes can be both green and safe. Understanding which plants pose dangers – and taking steps to prevent access – protects pets while allowing owners to enjoy the benefits of indoor gardening
In the end, the most beautiful home is one where every member of the household, from leafy décor to four-legged companions, can thrive safely together
