Syracuse, N.Y. — More than 140,000 eggs were dropped off at the Food Bank of Central New York on Friday as part of a national settlement with egg producers who were accused of artificially inflating prices
The eggs will be distributed to partners of the food bank across Central and Northern New York, said Andrew Katzer, director of procurement at Food Bank of Central New York, in a news release from the state Attorney General’s Office
The state’s investigation uncovered that companies had been participating in the scheme since 2022, the AG’s office said
The companies submitted artificially inflated bids to create the appearance of high demand. This drove up prices and distorted the market, officials said. The trickle-down effect impacted retailers and consumers across the nation
Part of the settlement reached in June required Cal-Maine Foods, Versova/Centrum and Hickman’s Egg Ranch to deliver 53 million eggs to food banks and charities across the 17 states involved in the settlement, according to the AG’s office. That included nearly 5 million eggs to New York state
The three companies must also pay $3.3 million to the states involved and change their business practices as a result of the settlement
Other egg drop-offs across New York included 280,800 in Brooklyn, the same number in Rochester and more than 140,000 in Elmira, the AG’s office said. Deliveries will continue through October
The investigation involved the New York Attorney General’s Office, the U.S. Department of Justice and 16 other states
Other states involved in the settlement were Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Wisconsin
