Water main break shuts down Hollywood Hills road; dozens of residents impacted

A water main break in the Hollywood Hills sent water rushing down Wonderland Avenue, prompting a response from emergency crews.
HOLLYWOOD HILLS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) –A water main break in the Hollywood Hills Thursday sent water rushing down Wonderland Avenue, prompting a response from emergency crews working to contain a heavy flow of water
The break occurred shortly after 1 p.m. in the area of Laurel Pass and Wonderland avenues
The water main break sent water rushing through nearby streets, leaving craters several feet wide in the roadway and muddy slopes along sidewalks
According to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, about 100 customers were affected. The water was turned off Thursday afternoon, which stopped the flooding. LADWP told neighbors to expect water service to be restored between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Friday
The water main break occurred near a home and close to an elementary school, but it was unclear if the school was impacted
Jennifer Toomy and Allison Barrett live at the home along Wonderland Avenue where the water main break began
“Somebody working in the back … he yelled my name, and I came running out and it was like a geyser, and it just flew all the way down the street, and it was so much water,” said Toomy
“It shot right up and it was shooting outside of the manhole, and then my water meter cover just flew off,” she said
Wonderland Avenue between North Laurel Pass Avenue and Vado Drive was closed as crews assessed street damage
It was unclear when the road would reopen
A separate water-related problem occurred about 15 miles away in Brentwood, where a water meter gasket serving a home along Westridge Road burst
Thursday’s water main break comes weeks after nearly 17 million gallons of water rushed down Palm Avenue in West Hollywood. Neighbors in the Hollywood Hills said they were relieved they didn’t see the same damage
