I’ve been watching you all weekend
I was at Steelers camp, guys, and when you stand there, standing up on this hill overlooking the field, I found myself just scanning the sideline being like, “Where is Mike Tomlin?
Where is Oh, he’s not here.”
Right
There’s gotta be some of that going on in the Baltimore Ravens camp because John Harbaugh is now in Jersey
Set the scene for us
What’s going on under Jesse Minter?
Kyle, that, that’s a great point because as Ian and I, you know, sit here, I’m thinking like, “John Harbaugh, all the camps I’ve come here,” but now he is gone, so Jesse Minter is the new head coach

Most importantly, and today’s the first day in pads
Yeah.
So these guys are gonna be hitting
We know this is when guys, we figure out who wants to play, who looked good all off-season is gonna really look good in pads
But with Jesse Minter coming here, he’s been here before, right?
He was here from ‘017 through- Yeah a couple years as a DB coach, things like that
So what do you expect to see?
Because, you know, John would have those really hard three-hour practices, really drive guys in the ground
We hear that’s absolutely- Yeah pulled back some under Jesse Minter
Yeah, and that really does seem to be a theme here, some, especially with some of the younger coaches who are more in, more in tune, let’s say, with kind of the younger type players

Now it’s m- young, it’s quicker practices, it’s more efficient
It’s get in and out
The attention spans of players are, are probably a little less than they were, so let’s just get the work done and get out of there
Jesse Minter really is gonna be a fascinating case here
He’s extremely well-respected defensive mind
He is an excellent leader, and really has been wherever he’s been, but he’s taken over a new team
And you know, usually there’s some curiosity
Usually there’s some, “Hey, we don’t know how it’s gonna go.”
As you mentioned, they know him, they know him well, and in a situation that’s rare every year, Kyle, but is not this year, it’s a first-year coach that takes over an excellent- Right talented team

It, this is something we never get to say, but it’s true with the Bills, it’s true with the Steelers, and it is true here with the Baltimore Ravens

I think you’re all over it
I think this is gonna be an interesting time when we look back on Lamar Allen, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen in the sense that they’ve basically had virtually identical careers
They both carry the same burden of trying to get over the hump, and now they both start- Yeah in their prime with brand-new coaches
Steve, bring us into the world of Lamar Jackson

How does he look out there?
And Ian, as always, there’s news, there’s contracts, all kinds of stuff, guys
You just cook
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, we really haven’t seen much
I mean, they’re gonna take the field i- in a little bit, and I have not been out here already
But everything you’re hearing about what Lamar and his relationship with new offensive coordinator Declan Doyle is it’s going well
We’re hearing some of the things that you’re hearing around the NFL
He’s going to be under center more
That’s gonna set up the play action pass
It’s gonna set up the boot a little bit more

But also Lamar’s gonna be working behind a new trifecta from guard, center, guard
That’s gonna be a big thing, a big tell we’re gonna notice today in practice in pads, ’cause they’ve gotta replace three good players there, Ian
So how is all of that gonna function with Lamar, with Derrick Henry, and what they’re trying to do overall offensively incorporating, again, three new offensive linemen into a unit that was together for years
Yeah, Declan Doyle certainly was a hot name across the NFL last year when it came to coordinator openings
I thought for a long time he was not gonna leave the Chicago Bears, not gonna leave Ben Johnson, someone who has, was sort of plucked from obscurity by Ben Johnson, has been learning there

Really liked the process of getting to know him and really getting into the playbook, and then this opportunity arose, right?
And this is really a rare opportunity to coach an MVP
I was just in, Cleveland
I was talking to head coach Todd Monken, obviously spent a lot of years in Baltimore
The Look, Lamar is talented, super talented
It is also a challenge reaching him, getting him engaged into something that Monken did exceptionally well
But for a lot of coaches, it, it could be an uphill battle
Right
It certainly seems like Declan Doyle has climbed that mountain, has gotten an engaged Lamar Jackson

If he is even just at the level that he was when Monken first take over, you know, took over the, the new coach and new schemes, just fully engaged like that, then this very, very talented Baltimore Ravens team can get the best of him, and the best of Lamar means this team is gonna go a long, long way
Well, look, we know Zay Flowers last year, 80-plus catches, more than 1,000 yards, but then this was a tight end and running back-centric receiving room
We know Zay Flowers, one of the better wide receivers
So which wide receiver’s gonna step up?
They’re still waiting for Rashod Bateman to be that guy

Could it be one of the rookie, wide receivers we were talking about, Elijah Surratt, the fourth-round draft pick- Jacoby Lane or Jacoby Lane
Yeah.
6’4″ out of USC
He’s been turning heads without pads on, especially in the middle of the field in intermediate range
So then we’re gonna see how that’s gonna work because we know Mark Andrews is there at tight end
Declan Doyle is a longtime tight end guy coming from the Sean Peyton, Ben Johnson tree, like you said, Ian
But again, how We just talked about Lamar
The wide receivers, how is that room gonna look?
I think that’s the biggest question mark with the Ravens right now

Well, Kyle kind of alluded to it
There’s always business to discuss with Lamar Jackson
There’s a lot of discussion about a contract extension
Certainly seems that it would make more sense next off-season than this off-season, but more clarity as the season is coming
For Zay Flowers, talking about the receivers, that is someone who I would say, as far as a contract extension goes, certainly deserves to be one of the highest paid receivers in the NFL
They have been talking
We will see if they were able to get there, the Baltimore Ravens and Zay Flowers and his agents
But he, his, what, what he does for this Baltimore Ravens offense is certainly exceptional

But you’re right, besides that, there’s been some really good tight ends
There’s been some really good running backs
Can one of the young wide receivers emerge in a way that they have been dying for?
Right
It has been years and years for these Baltimore Ravens to get one of the young receivers to emerge like Zay Flowers is
I- if it is one more, if it’s just one of those guys Steve mentioned or someone maybe on the roster we don’t know, this team is gonna be as, you know, I would say more electric than we even think they are going to be
That is, it’s gonna be really fun to watch here in Baltimore

You get the sense that there’s gonna be a cold weather game about four months from now where Lamar has a third and 11 and throws it to one of those young wide outs, and they just have to make a play, and we’ll see if they do
That’s why the- Yeah Ravens are always fascinating
Yeah.
Steve- Sure one of the guys on the defensive side of the ball that’s at your radar is Nnamdi Amakasuike, a guy who was an All-Pro a few years ago
Yeah.
What do you have on him?
Well, first off, I think this has been the most under-discussed storyline in the NFL in training camp is Nnamdi Amakasuike
As you mentioned, in 2023 he had 13 sacks, one of the best interior defensive linemen

His career was in jeopardy
And remember, he had that- Sure was significant neck injury sustained in week two of last year
Even up, up until a few weeks ago, they did not know if he would be medically cleared
Now he was, and as I mentioned, today is the first day they’re gonna hit
This is gonna be a big test
But if Nnamdi Amakasuike returns to the form that he was a couple years ago, that changes everything for this defense, and this is something not to overlook
His defensive line coach at that time was Anthony Weaver
That is the Ravens- Ooh new defensive coordinator
So having him back, if Amakasuike’s healthy, we might see something special on defensive front

Yeah, it’s amazing how hard those guys are to find across the NFL
You see some of the crazy contracts that some of these defensive linemen get
Obviously Jalen Carter with the Philadelphia Eagles was, was the latest
The reason why is they are so hard to find, right?
So for the Baltimore Ravens, not having the services of Nnamdi Amakasuike was something that hurt last year, and in my mind, I, it was very much up in the air whether he would see the football field again
The fact that he was cleared, the fact that he’s out there, it’s like the Ravens just acquired an All-Pro
It is a- Yeah huge impact

If he’s able to hit and be physical and be the player he was, it, it’s like they went out and signed a, a superstar in free agency
Just a huge, huge impact player
Yeah, today’s the first test though
