How JP Perpich’s Director Of U.S. Amateur Scouting Role Is Unique Compared To The Rest Of The NHL

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Wednesday that they made three hires. They brought in Dan Palango as director of amateur scouting, Brad Rossen as vice president of research and development, and JP Perpich as director of U.S. amateur scouting

Among those three additions by the organization, Perpich’s role particularly stands out. It’s not often that a team names a director of U.S. amateur scouting. In fact, among available staff directories, no team in the NHL has a staff member occupying such a role

Each team does have a head amateur scout or director of amateur scouting. Some even have a director of European scouting. But outside of the Maple Leafs, there is no official title that matches a director of U.S. amateur scouting

In general, a director of amateur scouting oversees the scouting operation for a designated region. The layout of the scouting staff differs between teams, but those directors typically focus on North America or Europe

As a director of U.S. amateur scouting, it’s obvious that Perpich will have a focus on young talent in the States

Perpich’s hire is an indication that the Maple Leafs and GM John Chayka are aware of the growth in American hockey. Not only is the collegiate level and the NCAA becoming more of a popular destination for young stars to develop, but the USHL continues to evolve as it is expanding to Arizona, California and Nevada

Though the Maple Leafs are the only team on record to have a director of U.S. amateur scouting, that doesn’t mean there aren’t individuals working a similar role. 

For example, the San Jose Sharks have Jon Hull, who is labelled as the “head USA amateur scout.” Also, the New York Rangers have Jamie Harrington, who serves as the director of NCAA scouting

At the end of the day, these are all similar roles, but that doesn’t take away the fact that Perpich has a unique role, and the attention the Maple Leafs are putting into youngsters developing in USA
