Health officials shut Thai restaurant in Kona for ‘rodent infestation’

The Hawaii Department of Health on Wednesday closed Baan Thai Family Cuisine in Kona after it failed a routine inspection
Baan Thai Family Cuisine in Kailua-Kona has been shut down by the state Department of Health due to a “rodent infestation and multiple critical food safety violations,” officials said Thursday
The restaurant — at 75-5744 Ali‘i Drive and operated by Miyavadee Khamya — received a red placard on Wednesday and must remain closed until the health officials conduct a follow-up inspection and all critical violations are resolved
The Health Department said in a news release that during a routine inspection, an inspector found the following violations: “an abundant amount” of rodent feces throughout the restaurant, including on food-contact surfaces and nonfood-contact surfaces; visible points of entry for unwanted pests; food was not stored to prevent contamination; potentially hazardous foods were not maintained at proper temperature; and hand-washing sinks were not equipped with soap
The department is requiring the restaurant to take the multiple corrective actions before it can reopen, including discarding all contaminated food products and having a professional pest control operator service the establishment and submit a report to health officials
