[AZ Central] Perdomo eyeing pitching upgrade as Diamondbacks fall to Nationals – It is understandable why starting pitching would be on Perdomo’s mind. Over the past two days, the Diamondbacks have handed the ball to a pair of rookie lefties in Mitch Bratt and Kohl Drake. Bratt got through five innings on Saturday, July 25, but he allowed five runs and walked five batters. Drake on Sunday allowed four runs in four-plus innings. “I think sometimes it’s a lot for them,” Perdomo said of young starters being thrust into a pennant race. “They don’t have so much experience. They have been doing the best they can do. They work hard every single time. Bratt and Drake, they (empty their tanks). Whatever has happened in the games, it’s tough for them, but at least we get some fight from them.”

[Dbacks.com] D-backs drop rubber game to fellow Wild Card contender as Deadline looms – Making his second Major League start on Sunday, Drake was given three leads but surrendered each one, allowing consistent hard contact. Ahead 4-2 in the fifth, he issued a leadoff walk to Nasim Nuñez and James Wood followed with a two-run homer to tie it. “The most important inning in baseball is the inning after you score, right?” Lovullo said. “Shutdown inning. I think the walk to start the fifth was very critical.” The poor pitching performances negated a solid afternoon for the the top of the lineup one day after Lovullo switched things up. The manager moved Ketel Marte down into the cleanup spot and Gabriel Moreno up to number three behind Corbin Carroll and Perdomo. The group combined to go 5-for-14 with five walks and six runs scored.

Arizona trotted out two of its rookie arms in Mitch Bratt and Kohl Drake. Both of those starters have shown some potential in the majors, but both were hammered by a strong Washington offense. Meanwhile, Merrill Kelly still has an ERA in the 5.00s with inconsistent command. Zac Gallen, when healthy, had the worst qualified ERA in baseball. Ryne Nelson may not be able to fully ramp back up, and Corbin Burnes isn’t expected back until early September, and his effectiveness is anything but guaranteed coming off both Tommy John surgery and a shoulder injury.

[MLB Trade Rumors] Diamondbacks Interested In Extension With Gabriel Moreno – The five-year, $99.4MM extension Cal Raleigh signed with the Mariners in advance of his 60-homer 2025 season might very well be a target point for Moreno’s agents at Klutch Sports. Raleigh inked his deal heading into his age-28 season (whereas Moreno will be 27), and with one of his three arb years already in the books. While Raleigh’s power numbers were superior to Moreno’s, their overall offensive production was pretty similar. Moreno has a career 114 wrC+ from 1429 career PA and counting, whereas Raleigh had a 111 wRC+ from 1760 PA at the time of his extension.
[Arizona Sports] The Athletic’s Bowden lists Angels pitcher Jose Soriano as trade target fit for Diamondbacks – Bowden noted the Diamondbacks’ need for a starting pitcher and his control beyond 2026 as the main reasons for the 27-year-old righty’s potential fit in Arizona. In 21 starts, Soriano has posted an 8-6 record with a 3.43 ERA, 122 strikeouts and a 1.25 WHIP. Soriano had a strong outing in his most recent start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday, pitching seven innings with just one run surrendered on four hits and seven strikeouts. With Soriano under control through 2028, he would also give the D-backs an option in the rotation beyond this season, as several starters are set to become free agents, including Michael Soroka and Zac Gallen. Corbin Burnes also has an opt-out clause in his contract.
[Noozhawk] A McCann-Do Attitude Has Arizona Diamondbacks Pointed Toward Playoffs – That Major League Baseball team trusts no one more with its pitchers than James McCann, a Dos Pueblos High School graduate who turned 36 last month. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo has described McCann’s mentorship of the team’s young mound staff as being “on a Ph.D. level.””You could probably target the day he got here and take a look at our ERA and do some of the reverse math on your own,” Lovullo said. “I know it’s been very good since he’s gotten here.”I think he’s had a strong input as to the success that we’ve had overall as a pitching staff.”

Beltrán and Jones are just the third and fourth center fielders elected by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America in nearly half a century. Since Duke Snider went in with the Class of 1980, only Kirby Puckett (2001) and Ken Griffey Jr. (2016) were counted as center fielders elected by the BBWAA until this year. Kent, who was elected by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee at the Winter Meetings last December, is the first second baseman to join the Hall since another Astro: Craig Biggio in 2015.

The Jazz name is iconic, “Mammoth” has quickly proven to be a popular choice and Real Salt Lake and Utah Royals FC have slick identities as well. Thus, the bar will be high for an MLB team name. They can’t afford to get it wrong. Scrolling through social media, some of the most popular name proposals include the Utah Outlaws, Utah Gulls, Utah Cutthroats, Utah Black Diamonds AND Utah Pioneers. Some have suggested the longtime minor league Bees brand get called up to the majors. But there’s a different minor league team that should be chosen for an MLB name: the legendary Salt Lake City Trappers.

There have certainly been bigger nautical disasters than HMS Titanic. The wartime sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff resulted in the loss of over nine thousand lives, roughly six times as many. But none has made such an indelible mark on pop culture. Purely in the cinema, there have been dozens of films based on or inspired by it. The first came out less than a month after Titanic sank, and starred actress Dorothy Gibson, who was actually a survivor of the event. Most famously, of course, is James Cameron’s Titanic, which remains the second-biggest movie worldwide, almost thirty years after its release. Tapping into this interest, an exhibition recently opened in Scottsdale, promising to “tell the story of the RMS Titanic like never before.” So, does it?
