It seems that Jack Campbell is ready to hang up the skates
In a social media post on Sunday, the former Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers goaltender announced he was stepping back from professional hockey
“I grew up my entire life chasing one dream, and that was to play in the NHL,” Campbell said in a video posted to his Instagram. “I was fortunate enough to accomplish that goal, playing eight seasons in the NHL and becoming an NHL all-star. Frankly, on paper, (I was) living a pretty awesome life
“Super grateful for my days of playing, but what a lot of people don’t see is the personal battle I went through throughout my career.”
Campbell confirmed in his caption that he was “walking away” from the sport
“Walking away from hockey wasn’t easy. It gave me more than I could have ever imagined. But over the last few years, I realized the work that brought me the most fulfillment wasn’t stopping pucks — it was helping people become who they’re capable of becoming,” Campbell also wrote, adding that he intends to pursue a career as a life coach
The 34-year-old, whose most recent team was the Detroit Red Wings, did not play at all last season and last appeared in the NHL during the 2023-24 season
He entered the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program in October 2024, but played 14 AHL games that season for the Grand Rapids Griffins
Campbell played for the Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings, Maple Leafs and Oilers during his eight-season NHL stint, earning a career .909 save percentage and 2.76 goals-against average across 176 games
