Lai touts Taiwan’s tech role, prowess
‘TAIWAN CAN LEAD’:
The nation has a responsibility to leverage its strengths and lead the advancement of technology and innovation worldwide, the president said

Taiwan is at the forefront of technological development and plays a critical role in global supply chains, President William Lai (賴清德) said yesterday, adding that the nation must leverage its strengths to demonstrate leadership and advance global technological progress
Lai made the remarks in a prerecorded video address shown during the 46th annual conference of the North America Taiwanese Professors’ Association, the Presidential Office said in a statement
The association has made a significant impact in academia over the past 46 years, and has helped Taiwan engage with the international community, Lai said

This year’s conference, titled “AI, Technology and Taiwan,” highlights Taiwanese academics’ concern for and support of Taiwan’s development
Taiwan belongs to the world, Lai said, adding that as humanity enters the era of artificial intelligence (AI), the nation stands at the forefront of technological innovation and serves as a critical link in the global supply chain
The nation has a responsibility to leverage its strengths and lead with confidence, embracing the spirit of “Taiwan can lead” to help advance technology and innovation worldwide, he said
The government’s goal is to transform Taiwan into a “smart nation” and it has been promoting the integration of AI across industries and into people’s daily lives, Lai said
The initiative aims to train at least 500,000 AI professionals by 2040 and help at least 1 million small and micro enterprises adopt smart technologies, enhancing Taiwan’s competitiveness and enabling it to meet the challenges of a new era, he said
Lai called the conference’s participants pioneers in North American academia, and said their insights and support are vital as Taiwan confronts the challenges and opportunities arising from shifting international circumstances and rapid technological change
He thanked the association and overseas Taiwanese communities for their contributions to Taiwan’s progress, and said that with their support and cooperation, Taiwan could confidently safeguard its democracy, freedom and prosperity regardless of the challenges ahead

Typhoon Bavi’s center is looking more likely to pass north of Taiwan than to make landfall in the northern part of the country, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said yesterday, adding that the storm is still too far away to forecast its exact track.
As of 2pm yesterday, the center of Typhoon Bavi was about 2,560km east-southeast of Taiwan, moving west-northwest at 27kph, according to the agency.
The storm, which has a radius of 350km, had sustained winds of 216kph near its center, with gusts of up to 270kph, CWA data showed.

Taipei, New Taipei City, Taoyuan and others announced work and class closures today, with the storm expected to affect Taiwan through tomorrow The outer rain bands of Typhoon Bavi would begin affecting Taiwan today, with its storm circle reaching land this evening and its level-10 wind radius covering all of northern Taiwan by noon tomorrow, an official said yesterday.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued a sea warning for the storm at 2:30pm yesterday, advising of heightened danger in eastern areas and in the Bashi Channel south of Taiwan.
Typhoon Bavi is expected to bring strong winds, extremely heavy rainfall and rough seas to Taiwan today and tomorrow, with the heaviest rain forecast for mountainous areas and sustained winds of up to 12 on

Brunt of storm expected today

Typhoon Bavi was expected to have its strongest impact on Taiwan from last night through daytime today, with its storm circle forecast to reach areas from New Taipei City’s northeast coast to Yilan and Hualien counties early today, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said yesterday.
As of 6pm yesterday, the center of the typhoon was about 590km east of Taiwan’s southernmost tip at Oluanpi (鵝鑾鼻), moving northwest at 26kph, the CWA said.
The storm was packing maximum sustained winds of 155kph near its center, with gusts reaching 191kph. It had a radius of 380km.

Bavi injures 113, leaves hundreds of homes in dark

Typhoon Bavi lashed Taiwan yesterday, injuring 113 people, prompting the evacuation of 14,605 residents and knocking out power in 234,481 households, the government said.
Most of the injuries were due to people falling off motorcycles or bicycles due to strong winds and slippery roads, and others occurred during the typhoon preparations, Central Emergency Operations Center (CEOC) data as of 8pm yesterday showed.
No fatalities or severe injuries had been reported as of press time last night.
Due to flooding and landslide risks, 14,605 people had been evacuated nationwide, led by 5,182 people in Hualien County, 2,096 in Taichung, 1,700 in New Taipei,
