The Boston Red Sox injected elite talent into their farm system on Saturday, using the opening day of the 2026 MLB Draft to lock down a trio of dynamic position players
Highlighting the day for the Red Sox was a pair of college teammates fresh off a deep run in the College World Series. Boston kicked off its draft by selecting North Carolina shortstop Jake Schaffner with the No. 20 overall pick, before doubling down on the Tar Heels’ powerhouse offense by snatching outfielder Owen Hull in the second round at No. 67
To wrap up their day, the Red Sox tapped into the high school ranks by selecting Jace Mataczynski. The gifted shortstop out of Hudson High School (WI), who had previously committed to Auburn, entered the weekend as one of the most coveted high school bats available in the draft
With the foundation set, eyes now shift to Sunday for rounds 5 through 20, followed by the final stretch on Monday, where Boston’s front office will look to unearth deep-value prospects. Whether they are hunting for immediate minor-league contributors or high-upside projects who could one day shine under the lights at Fenway Park, the search for the franchise’s next hidden gems is officially underway
