Six San Antonio-area companies made the cut for U.S. News & World Report’s list of the best companies to work for
The media company, known for consumer advice and its rankings, evaluated thousands of companies across 14 industry categories, such as finance and insurance, manufacturing and agriculture, information technology and consumer products. The <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/us-news–world-report-unveils-the-2026-2027-best-companies-to-work-for-ratings-302813941.html” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>top 25% are recognized on the 2026-2027 U.S. News Best Companies to Work For list. This year’s list is the first to include both public and private companies.

The company’s goal is to help job hunters and employees decide which workplaces “may be a good fit for them.”
“Between ramped-up AI adoption in workplaces across industries and changes to parental leave policies at major companies, the job force is navigating turbulent shifts that have left many young grads, job seekers and employees feeling uncertain of where their career will land,” said Carly Chase, vice president of the careers division at U.S. News.

To be evaluated for the list, privately owned companies had to have at least 1,000 employees and more than $500 million in annual revenue, as defined by ZoomInfo. As for publicly traded companies, it looked at the 5,000 largest firms based on market capitalization as of Jan. 3. Both private and public companies had to have at least 75 Glassdoor reviews written between 2021 and 2025 to be considered for the list

Companies were scored from one to five based on quality of pay and benefits, work-life balance and flexibility, job and company stability, physical and psychological comfort, belonging and esteem, and professional development and career opportunities. More than 1,300 companies had scores high enough to make the list
A total of 104 Texas-based companies made the list. The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex accounted for nearly half of the companies, with a total of 50, followed by the Houston metro area with 30 firms
The Austin metro area had 16 companies, including Keller Williams Realty and jewelry company Kendra Scott, which both have offices in San Antonio, and San Marcos-based engineering and construction firm McCoy’s Building Supply.
The Hill Country is represented by James Avery Artisan Jewelry in Kerrville, which earned top marks for the work-life balance, stability, comfort and sense of belonging it offers.

Frost Bank
U.S. News gave the midsize finance and insurance companyscores of five for offering its 6,000 workers work-life balance, stability, comfort and a sense of belonging. It scored a four for professional development and a three for quality of pay

The supermarket chain founded in 1905 and run by the Butt family employs 125,000 workers and has annual revenue exceeding $5 billion It scored fives for its work-life balance, stability, comfort, sense of belonging and professional development opportunities. It earned a three for its quality of pay
Pape-Dawson Engineers
Founded in 1965, the engineering and construction companygot top marks for its quality of pay, work-life balance, stability, comfort and professional development opportunities. The company, which is listed as having 3,050 employees, earned a four for providing a sense of belonging

Southwest Research Institute
The education and public services company, which employs 3,100 people, earned fives for the stability, sense of belonging and professional development it offers. It earned fours for work-life balance and comfort and a three for quality of pay.
TaskUs
The New Braunfels-based company, with a total of 65,500 workers internationally, got top marks for professional development and comfort. It earned a four for its work-life balance, threes for stability and a sense of belonging, and a two for quality of pay.

Valero Energy
The energy company founded in 1980 is listed as having 9,800 employees internationally. It scored fives for providing a sense of belonging and stability, fours for quality of pay and professional development and a three for work-life balance. It earned only a one for comfort
